Our front page, with its picture, weighs 100 KB. The median home page on a phone weighs 2,311 KB (Web Almanac 2024), about 23 times more. By the same method, a visit to it uses 0.69 Wh and emits 0.34 g of CO₂e.
Method: Sustainable Web Design, version 4, with the figures of CO2.js 0.19.0. Moving 1 GB uses 0.3 kWh, counting data centre, network and device, to run them and to make them. Each kWh emits 494 g of CO₂e, the world average for 2022 (Ember). It is a first visit, with nothing cached.
What is weighed: every page of this site in English and Spanish, compressed, with the largest picture it can ask for (a phone usually gets a smaller one). 1 KB is 1,000 bytes; the Almanac does not say which it uses, and 1,000 gives its median the lower figure. The tools are not added here: each weighs its pages in its own build.
It is an estimate from the bytes, not a measurement of power use.
We have no proof that this site's host, statichost.eu, runs on renewable energy, so the estimate takes nothing off for it.
